The PT6 is a "free" Power Turbine design. The Power Turbine is disconnected from the compressor and only drives the propeller. The engine has two separate rotating groups: the Gas Producer (GP) rotating group and the Power Turbine (PT) rotating group.
This gives the engine greater flexibility in starting and operation.
