The PT6 Turbo Prop/Turboshaft Engine is produced by Pratt and Whitney of Canada Ltd. It is the most widely used corporate/commuter turboprop engine in the world. Although there are several different models of the PT6 all models have the basic construction. The models range in power from 500 HP to 900 HP.
In its 45 year production life, the PT6 has been used as a turboprop engine on a wide variety of aircraft, as a helicopter engine in both single and twin engine applications, as an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) engine for large airliners, as a high speed train engine, as a commercial truck engine, and as a stationary electrical generating power unit.
Over 26,000 engines have been produced since its original design in 1964. The engine is still in active production and service throughout the world. Originally designed for the Canadian North, the PT6 is very robust and easily maintained. Its simple operation and high reliability have lead to its popularity in many demanding applications around the world.
